DEFINITION OF GENRE: Creative or Literary Nonfiction is defined as fact-based literary writing that has the narrative, dramatic, meditative, and lyrical elements of fiction, drama, or poetry. Authors are solely and entirely responsible for the accuracy of their work.

ELIGIBILITY: Only book-length manuscripts are eligible. Manuscripts must be original works in English for adult readers of which you are the sole author. Essays or shorter work previously published in other journals or periodicals are eligible for inclusion as part of a book-length manuscript, but manuscripts previously published in their entirety are not eligible. A manuscript may be submitted to other publishers while it is under consideration by Orphan Press, but must be withdrawn immediately if published or recognized elsewhere for an award.

SUBMISSIONS: Orphan Press accepts electronic submissions and payments only. No hard copies or checks accepted. Once a manuscript has been submitted, it cannot be revised or altered. The winning author will have an opportunity to revise the work prior to publication. No entry fees or manuscripts will be returned.

JUDGING: The Orphan Press Creative Nonfiction Contest is judged by a board of editors. All manuscripts are judged anonymously. Please do not include a personal letter or an acknowledgements page. The decision of the judges is final. The winner will be announced in a timely manner on the Orphan Press website at
